Homeopathy is Health
…and Health is Life.

What is Homeopathy?

“Through the like, disease is produced, and through the application of the like it is cured.”
Hippocrates 460 BC

Although the concept of homeopathy was spoken of by Hippocrates over two thousand years ago – it wasn’t until the end of the 18th century that a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, formulated the system we practice today.

The word ‘homeopathy’ is derived from two Greek words: “homoios” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning suffering.
This refers to the basic premise of homeopathy, stating that any substance that causes particular symptoms in a healthy person is also able to cure those same symptoms when occurring in a sick person.
A simple example would be to notice how many people suffer insomnia if drinking coffee close to bedtime. The remedy ‘Coffea Tosta’, provided other aspects of the totality of the person being treated are also present – will cure the insomnia, no matter what the underlying cause.
This is just one example to illustrate the primary rule of homeopathy - ‘Like cures like’.

“Just as you ought not attempt to cure eyes without head or head without body, so you should not treat body without soul.”
Socrates. 469 BC

One of the other most important factors in homeopathy is that we treat the whole person.
Every symptom and factor that makes you into the individual that you are is taken into account.
It is logical, isn’t it? How could there be deep and lasting healing unless this was so?

How remedies are made.

The original substance (plant, animal or mineral) is first thoroughly pulverised and then a tiny amount of it is added to a specific amount of liquid. One drop of this mixture is taken and put into a further vial. This process is continued until the required dilution is reached. In addition to the systematic dilution, Hahnemann found that the remedy had an even stronger effect if it was strongly shaken between each stage of the dilutions. This process is known as ‘succusion’. This work is carried out by pharmacies specialising exclusively in the preparation of homeopathic remedies. Well-known pharmacies in Europe are Helios, Ainsworths, Nelsons, Boiron and Dolisos.

How do homeopaths come to understand each remedy?

There are over 4,000 different remedies, each one meticulously documented. They are first studied by what is known as a ‘Proving’.
The remedy is given to a group of people over a certain period of time. They carefully note any new symptoms that they begin to experience.
As it is known that homeopathically prepared substances cause symptoms, we understand that the remedy itself is actually causing these new symptoms.
When the information is gathered together, we will see which symptoms manifested most strongly in all those participating in the ‘proving’. We may find that 19 out of 22 people experienced a crushing headache behind the right eye at 4pm. Therefore we can be fairly certain that if other symptoms are also present – this will be a good remedy to cure such a pain.
This fact is the basis of Hahnemann’s observation, ‘Like cures like’.

Recent criticism

Periods of criticism from orthodox medicine have occurred throughout homeopathy’s history.
They appear – and just as suddenly disappear as the overwhelmingly positive experience of patients eclipses the voices of the few ‘naysayers’.
Homeopathic remedies are cheap and cure can be permanent – not something generally appreciated by the multi-million pound pharmaceutical companies! It is worth remembering, too, when Homeopathy is concluded to be a result of the 'placebo effect' - how beautifully, speedily and deeply it can cure babies and animals - they are certainly not prone to the power of suggestion! So it is a great shame that many of the trials shown to prove the efficacy of homeopathy are suppressed, whilst in other trials the positive results have been skewed or completely changed to reflect a negative result. If you are just beginning to explore homeopathy, or are concerned by the recent negative press, I would encourage you to read the following article.

It is not as if our homeopathic brothers are asleep: far from it, they are awake…to the importance of the scientific study of disease. It is distressing that so many good men live isolated from the great body of our profession. The original grievous mistake was ours – to quarrel with our brothers over infinitesimals was a most unwise and stupid thing to do.
Sir William Osler (1849-1919) Recipient of the Regius Professorship of Medicine, Oxford University.

The fact that today there are millions of people who use homeopathy as their single choice of medicine is proof of the validity of Hahnemann's ideas – and is born out by one simple fact - it works!
